GUIDE TO SIZES

Cuban Cigars

GUIDE TO SIZES There are no fewer than 42 shapes and sizes of handmade Havanas. The 30 is the most popular in the world. They vary in length from under four to over nine inches and in ring gauge, which is the diameter measured in 64ths of an inch, from 26 to 52. So far so good but then things become complicated. Some names, like Panetelas, are used to denote a particular size in a number of Havana marques. The snag is, the size is not necessarily the same. A Romeo y Julieta Panetela, for example, is 4 5/8 inches long with a 34 ring gauge while a Cohiba Panetela is 4 1/2 inches with a 26 ring gauge. But even where the cigars are of the same size, as often as not, they are called by different names. For example a cigar which is seven inches long with a 47 ring gauge, perhaps best known as a Churchill, can be found as a Prince of Wales, Coronas Gigantes or Esplendidos depending on whether it is a Romeo y Julieta, a Bolivar or a Cohiba.

Confusing isn't it?

Luckily there is a comprehensive list of names for the different shapes and sizes of Havanas. It is the one used by the people who actually make the cigars. They have a Vitola de Galera, or factory name, for each type of Havana. The 30 shown here are captioned with their Vitolas de Galera, lengths, ring gauges and the names they are known by in the twelve leading brands. But there's something else...
